Description
The village of Catskill is the county seat of Greene County, NY. Located on land purchased from the natives in 1684, the village was incorporated in 1806 and celebrated its bicentennial in 2006.
Catskill is situated where the 46-mile-long Catskill Creek flows into the Hudson River. Like many Hudson River towns, it is undergoing a revival and becoming especially noted for its artistic and cultural life. In this regard it has a proud heritage: Thomas Cole (1801–1848), founder of the Hudson River School of painting, lived and worked here for a long time. His house, Cedar Grove, is a designated historic site and offers tours, exhibits, and lectures.
Catskill is the western terminus of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. On the eastern terminus lies the city of Hudson, the home of Olana, the estate of Hudson River artist and Cole’s student Frederic E. Church (1826-1900).
For this photograph I took advantage of the bright morning sunlight to include reflections of the buildings on the opposite side of the street in these shop windows.
